Learning my CNC machine has not been as vexing as anticipated, but has easily given me all the vexation I need.

Aristotle famously said A = A.

Sometimes everything is perfect on one side of the equation so one expects perfection on the other. That rarely happens with a newbie on a CNC.

I finally discovered the source of my hidden error: the inlay app automatically adjusts your shapes to account for “tolerances”. That’s good when you’re making pieces that fit together. That’s a hidden error when you’re making templates that will then make pieces that fit together.

After figuring that out, the rest was fun.

After twelve templates and cutting two new styluses (different diameters change the fit of the pieces) I have a process that works. I’m sure there will be improvements along the way, but I’m going to start putting different shapes into some cues. I don’t want to make tangled messes. Too many inlays and the cue looks like someone took the brown acid, and as Monck told Woodstock, “that is not specifically too good.”

But a paramedic symbol is simple, elegant, loaded with significance and for some, encapsulates a life mission, a dedication to serve and save that is beautiful. Noble, even.

I think that fits on a Character Cue just fine.
