(updated images below…)

This will take a few hours, but the first coat is on Caribbean Stick. Others get added on top to deepen and adjust the color. The waves are caused by the wood: curly spalted maple. It’s been stabilized, but the pores are still accepting dye. The darker areas are where the ripples in the wood come to the surface. The pores are open there and the dye enters. The lighter spaces have pores too, but they’re aligned with the length of the stick, so the dye doesn’t penetrate as much.

If you’re new to my posts, this is spalted wood… meaning, it’s decayed, and then treated with resin to halt the decay and fill the pores with plastic. The black lines are where the fungi ate to, kind of like territorial lines, or high water marks. The wood enclosed in the black lines has different absorption patterns as well. It’s a lot easier to see them when I treat the wood with dye when stabilizing — but there’s no way to do that and get the effect we’re going after here, so I’m applying dye topically after stabilization.

This stick will ultimately have about 6 shades, blended top to bottom.

I get jazzed every time I work on it. Can’t wait to do the same thing with all my red dyes.

Or green.

Or whatever floats your boat.

See what I did there? Caribbean, water, float your boat… 😉

Below are stages the stick went through, concluding with the image on the right. The stick is dry on the right, and the epoxy finish will brighten the colors and add depth. The natural ripples of the curly maple are augmented by the way I applied the dye heavier in areas, with a goal of giving the appearance you get looking through a pool of water.

This thing is a thrill for me too. I was hoping to get it to have the ripples, but this is extraordinary.

Curious if you want the deep, almost purple look for the bottom? Or should it stand as is?
