    Shagbark Hickory Cue Cores

The core Character Cues builds on. Sold by the Three. Guaranteed Straight.

This is the core design used by Character Cues: a full shagbark hickory spine, stepped so it drops straight into the holes most builders already cut. ¾” for the first 20 inches (butt sleeve / handle). ⅝” for the remaining 10.5″ (forearm).
Those diameters accommodate material cored with Sterling gun drills — the tools most cue builders already run. A working fit for the shop standard.
    • ¾” × 20″ for the handle / main core section
    • ⅝” × 10.5″ for the forearm / forward section
    • 30.5″ overall so you have length to tenon, trim, and finish

    Why Shagbark Hickory?

True hickory is among the hardest, densest, and strongest hardwoods in North America — stiffer and tougher under impact than hard maple. That is why Character Cues runs a full hickory core as standard: a firm, solid hit and a spine that can carry figured, spalted, or stabilized outer wood without giving up structure.
On the table, hickory plays firm and sends loving feedback — the hit Character Cues is known for.

    The turning story

These were not problem blanks brought to heel.  The wood was selected straight and stayed straight. Every pass was conservative: center preserved, heat kept down, geometry confirmed. More than a dozen turns locked that condition in — a finished core whose straightness was protected, not repaired. What you receive is a shop-ready stepped core at the diameters your Sterling-cored forearm and handle expect (please verify your inner diameters will work), with Character Cues geometry built in and the original line of the wood still intact.

    What cue makers get

    • A proven design. The same stepped hickory core Character Cues builds around.
    • A shop-standard fit. ¾” and ⅝” sized for Sterling gun-drill bores used by most builders.
    • Less fitting, more building.
    • Perfect stock, protected. Multi-pass turning that sealed in straightness. Guaranteed.
    • Save your bits, blades and lungs! The core work is done.

Character Cues geometry. Sterling-ready sizes. Straight from selection to the last pass.

    Fine print

Cores are construction blanks. Final tenons, rings, joint work, and finish are the builder’s.
Hickory hits firm — match taper, tip, and outer woods to the player.
Store dry, support full length, and acclimate before final turning.
Fit assumes standard ¾” / ⅝” Sterling-cored material; always confirm your actual bore before glue-up.
Every single dowel placed on rollers and verified perfect before shipping.

    Stick 164: Santa’s Fargo

    Butt & Joint Protector: $825

BurcHowdy FW Shaft & Joint Protector: $500

Oh, no, not at all. I’m not suggesting Santa shoots with a Character Cue.

    I’m suggesting you do.  🙂

Santa’s Fargo is going to be the most deft beast you ever held. Purple heart core means density. In another universe Purple Heart is the source of both gravity and the strong magnetic force. Here on earth, it’s just a perfect core wood when you want a cue that doesn’t cower, but steps forward and says send me.

Cue the biblical goosebumps. The sacrifice you normally make with a purple heart core is the same as its benefit: mass. All that weight in the back makes a stick that oversteers. Wags the dog. Fights your eye.

Not so with Santa’s Fargo! Paired with the BurcHowdy FW (forward weight), the balance point is a healthy 19.5″ from the bumper. So instead of telling you what to do, Santa’s Fargo is the 300lb security man forever waiting your nod. Mass that knows its place. A cue that says Send Me, then carries you to glory.

Ultra low deflection, 12.13 mm medium Ultraskin means english out the wazoo, a short game played with a scalpel wielded by a 300 lb security man who does what you say exactly how you say to do it.

    Control. Santa’s Fargo. Don’t wait.

  • Stick LE149: Limited Edition Batch 2: Blessed is the Steadfast

Stick LE149: Limited Edition Batch 2: Blessed is the Steadfast

Butt, Burchowdy Shaft and matched joint protectors $1325

I made my second limited edition batch in response to a request that I do more out of non-dyed stabilized wood. All of the Beatitudes butts began as a single piece of spalted wood long enough to be both a forearm and butt sleeve. Some were long enough to also offer an extension as an add on, if wanted. The Beatitudes Limited Edition have product numbers from LE149 to LE156. The grain in each contiguous piece is aligned even when the pieces are not contiguous, as when there is a ring set or handle in between. All of the designs were dictated by the wood itself, as my cuts were placed where I could get the straightest sections to work with.

Woods used in the batch: Oak, maple, apple, walnut, yellow birch, black birch burl, black cherry red rot, and of course, all on shagbark hickory cores. I harvest rotting wood from around where I live in western PA, dry it to zero percent humidity, and stabilize with Cactus Juice resin. The resulting material is significantly more dense than the original wood was — that’s why I can use a soft wood like walnut or cherry and have it produce a hit like hard maple or some other dense wood.

BLESSED IS THE STEADFAST has a forearm, handle, and butt sleeve of slightly curly, burnt in Alpaca Luke’s fire pit, piece of apple wood. The apple tree, incidentally, lost its life to alpacas rubbing their sides against it and debarking it over the years, as it provided them much shade and killing it made sense to their leaders.

The wood is stabilized now, better than new. However, the piece was so bent and shrunk after stabilizing, I had to introduce other wood to the mix. Black birch burl to the rescue.

You can throw black birch burl in a tux or in jeans and a wife beater, and it’s black birch burl. Its presence creates the respect it demands.

That’s always true of the real deal.

    Grab this one. Don’t wait.

  • Stick 61 The First Kiss

Protected: Stick 61 The First Kiss

Spalted/Stabilized Black Locust, Beech, Walnut BUTT with Black Cherry Burl/Spalted Maple JOINT PROTECTOR: $775

This is the first butt to become available on the “ready to ship” tab on CharacterCues.com for a long while. I could have named it A WALK THROUGH THE WOODS with all the different species involved.

I am enamored with the depth of the burl in the joint protector and with the knots in the black locust, the pale wood next to the butt sleeve. (Did you know Black Locust glows under a black light? Indeed. It causes a stir. And then of course, I can’t fail to mention the walnut’s chatoyance. It’s what they invented the word for. And the beech! Good night! Bolts of orange through bolts of black and brown and burnt bolts — !!!

Plus I added a quarter inch cap of maple on the end of the joint protector just for the squiggles. And the image the squiggles drew in my mind’s eye were of a frog looking off, cap askance, at a summer love arriving to the party to party.

    Equipped with extension-accepting bumper.

Woods Used: Black locust (glows in black light), beech, walnut

    Butt Length: 29″ including bumper

    Full Core: hard maple

    Pin: Radial, brass

    Collar: .85″ Phenolic

    Butt Widest: 1.24″

Weight: 13.3 – 15.3 oz (with weight bolt added before shipping. Be sure to ask because I have to epoxy the extension bumper before shipping, and after that, the weight isn’t changing.)
