I can tell you how mine shoot.

I have played for over 50 years and played serious league play for 25. Have owned a lot of cues, a lot of really cheap ones and some not so cheap. I own two of Clayton’s cues and both shoot very well, but, the latest one, ”Bob”, with the carbon shaft is magical, it has raised my shooting to a level that I have not shot in ten years. Try one, it will be great!

A gorgeous functional piece of art that the average person can afford.

“I absolutely lucked into a really cool looking phenomenal cue from a maker that doesn’t have monster cue making rep and prices, yet! I highly recommend you all stop spending your money on painted stickers junk import cues and check out Character Cues. Each cue is unique, named, numbered and has heart! A gorgeous functional piece of art that the average person can afford.

Check him out! You won’t be disappointed.

I know quality and workmanship when I see it.

I own two of Clayton’s cues with a 3rd being built. I’ve been playing this game for 50+ years and I must say that of all the cues I’ve shot with, these are some of the finest. Very well balanced with great feel and feedback. My main playing cue has been a Southwest cue for the last 20 yrs. which IMO is one of the finest cues ever made. It’s a rare day I don’t use the SW but lately it’s being left in my case more and more since playing with Clayton’s cues…. Why you may ask did I pick a Character cue. Just look at them. Have you ever seen such gorgeous lumber. I admit the beauty is what caught my eye. I was hesitant at first as looks ain’t everything. I gave one a shot, no pun intended, boy was I pleasantly surprised and elated how well they play. To boot, I love that Clayton holds back nothing in sharing with us his building techniques. I know wood quite well as I used to build custom cabinets and custom homes for some 40 years. I know quality and workmanship when I see it. Thanks Clayton.

I have been in search of a statement piece player’s cue and boy oh boy did I find one

If your looking for a truly unique and one of a kind custom cue you can’t go wrong purchasing one of Clayton’s masterpieces!! I have been in search of a statement piece player’s cue and boy oh boy did I find one. I won the auction on Monday, sent my request of cue tips that night, and I was informed my “Conk Walker” was in the mail the very next day! Thursday i was shooting with and showing off this beauty. It was a pleasure to do business with Character Cues. The value far exceeds the price!!!

Character Cues: THE MIGHTY CONK WALKER – jay Reed

The Process:

  1. Have a good idea in mind of what you’re looking for. How is it like other cues I’ve done? Most often, folks say they’d like me to build one that is in the same style as another I’ve done, but with different colors or species of wood. I’ve also worked with folks who have sent drawings they’ve made, and others photos of other cues, to demonstrate an inlay.
  2. Reach me at clayton@charactercues.com with what you have in mind, and whether you’d like to use another Character Cue as a template, follow your drawing. or have me run wild with the build after you select the wood.  The only thing that is not an option is to not have a clear idea of what you want. If that’s where you’re at, just go back to the last cue that really caught your eye and muse about what you’d change to make it the cue you carry when you whoop ass next Thursday at leagues.
  3. We’ll set a time to talk on the phone. Collaborating on a work of art means you will have questions and I will have questions. We’ll each ask enough to get started.
  4. I set aside time to answer a lot of questions for custom buyers, but I can’t change material — I can’t cut a piece of wood or core it — and that means I can’t do a layout of a cue, until a purchase has been made.
  5. I can build just about any payment plan a person would want. I’m happy to accommodate. Most folks go with a monthly payment, and the next most popular option is half at the start and half at completion, in 7 months.
  6. Once the cue goes into the finishing rotation (6 months after glue), I’ll send updates via text or Messenger, if you like. Most folks find it creates another layer of connection to their cue that makes it uniquely theirs.
  7. Finishing process takes about a week.
  8. Your cue comes packed in foam, newspaper, pvc, newspaper, and cardboard. I prefer to ship via USPS because of both speed and price for insured packages. If it is imperative to you that your cue arrives via FedEx or UPS, I will do so if you are willing to pick up the extra cost of shipping through them.

Price Tiers: (based on scarcity of materials and time to build).

  • Spalted wood is lower price tier; I harvest, process, and stabilize local spalted hardwoods
  • Burl is higher tier due to scarcity and added complexity of the build.
  • Live edge is higher tier due to time involved/complexity of the build.

Butt:

  • Spalted — $700
  • Live Edge–$1100
  • Burl Handle–$800
  • Half Burl– $1200
  • Whole Burl– $2,000

Shafts:

  • Carbon Fiber — $450
  • Any wood species
    • Plain– $300
    • Like-wood collar ring– $350

Inlays:

  • 4-Diamond Rings (2) –$200
  • 8-Diamond Rings (2) –$250
  • 4 Floating Points — $300
  • 8 Floating Points — $350

Joint Protector:

  • Like wood — $75

Like-Build Extensions:

  • 3 -6″ — $250
  • 7 – 12″ — $300

About the Numbers

I price my work to keep me reliant on God. Most sticks take about a week to a week and a half to build when all the work is added up. Burl and live edge longer. I do everything from harvest and process the wood to packing and shipping. My number will be the lowest number that can keep me in business — if I get it most of the time.

Because you also must be a diligent steward of your dollars, if your righteous best number is within shooting distance of mine, then I will do my best to come to yours.
