Shagbark Hickory Cue Cores
The core Character Cues builds on. Sold by the Three. Guaranteed Straight.
This is the core design used by Character Cues: a full shagbark hickory spine, stepped so it drops straight into the holes most builders already cut. ¾” for the first 20 inches (butt sleeve / handle). ⅝” for the remaining 10.5″ (forearm).
Those diameters accommodate material cored with Sterling gun drills — the tools most cue builders already run. A working fit for the shop standard.
- ¾” × 20″ for the handle / main core section
- ⅝” × 10.5″ for the forearm / forward section
- 30.5″ overall so you have length to tenon, trim, and finish
Why Shagbark Hickory?
True hickory is among the hardest, densest, and strongest hardwoods in North America — stiffer and tougher under impact than hard maple. That is why Character Cues runs a full hickory core as standard: a firm, solid hit and a spine that can carry figured, spalted, or stabilized outer wood without giving up structure.
On the table, hickory plays firm and sends loving feedback — the hit Character Cues is known for.

The turning story
These were not problem blanks brought to heel. The wood was selected straight and stayed straight. Every pass was conservative: center preserved, heat kept down, geometry confirmed. More than a dozen turns locked that condition in — a finished core whose straightness was protected, not repaired. What you receive is a shop-ready stepped core at the diameters your Sterling-cored forearm and handle expect (please verify your inner diameters will work), with Character Cues geometry built in and the original line of the wood still intact.

Character Cues geometry. Sterling-ready sizes. Straight from selection to the last pass.
Fine print
Cores are construction blanks. Final tenons, rings, joint work, and finish are the builder’s.
Hickory hits firm — match taper, tip, and outer woods to the player.
Store dry, support full length, and acclimate before final turning.
Fit assumes standard ¾” / ⅝” Sterling-cored material; always confirm your actual bore before glue-up.
Every single dowel placed on rollers and verified perfect before shipping.
