Here’s another that’s been in pieces for weeks and I finally grabbed a half morning to get it together.

Naturally, the pics right now are crappy. HOWEVER….

I shoulda called the butt JUST DAMN or BONKERS BEAUTY or HOLD MY TUNA SAMMICH, JANE; something over the top.

Because the spalting and grain are out of this world. Squiggles all over the joint. The deepest burnt red (rings) I’ve ever managed. A black/green handle with the craziest network of surface level pocks and crevices — already partly filled with purple mica/epoxy.

Fortune Favors the bold.

Purpleheart is dense, with a Janka score of 2,520 lbs. American Hornbeam (that stunningly-grained blue handle section) (AKA Ironwood in these parts), has a Janka of 1,780, making it among the densest US hardwoods.

That’s what makes El Jefe, well… Boss.

What is Janka? From Wood Database:

“The actual number listed in the wood profile is the amount of pounds-force (lbf) or newtons (N) required to imbed a .444″ (11.28 mm) diameter steel ball into the wood to half the ball’s diameter. This number is given for wood that has been dried to a 12% moisture content.”

Hard maple, prized among many cue builders, has a Janka of only 1,450.

What’s it mean, really? First, the wood is harder to dent. Second, it’s heavy. Third, the hit is as close to zero vibration as you’re going to get. Just a solid connection with no backsass. When El Jefe says move, the cue ball moves. When El Jefe says dance, the cue ball dances. You get the point.

El Jefe, simply, is the boss.

This butt took forever. I worked on it bit by bit over several months. The original layout used the forearm piece as a middle section with black and white stabilized beech on each end. The idea at that time was that the red inlaid maple would suggest eyes and the green, lizard skin. But the pieces for each end disappointed me every time I looked at them so I waited until a color combination worked better for me, and that happened when I replaced the ends with gold colored beech.

But they weren’t the right thickness to use on each end. One was too skinny. So I shifted the green to the forearm and used the gold as a handle. Once that was in place, it was a matter of testing every color I could find to strike the right balance between, yeah, that works and what the skippy fuck was this guy thinking?

The butt features 16 red diamond inlays and 8 lizards. The lizards are filled with different colored epoxy. I have no idea what the final colors will be, as I filled the lizard shape holes four times each, alternating colors. If any come out all one color on the final cut, I’ll dig out the middle with a Dremel and give it a second color.

I fall in love with each cue I build but just wow boy howdy I fell hard for this one. Cannot wait to see it with a finish.
