This is the core design used by Character Cues: a full shagbark hickory spine, stepped so it drops straight into the holes most builders already cut. ¾” for the first 20 inches (butt sleeve / handle). ⅝” for the remaining 10.5″ (forearm).
Those diameters accommodate material cored with Sterling gun drills — the tools most cue builders already run. A working fit for the shop standard.- ¾” × 20″ for the handle / main core section

Why Shagbark Hickory?

The turning story
These were not problem blanks brought to heel. The wood was selected straight and stayed straight. Every pass was conservative: center preserved, heat kept down, geometry confirmed. More than a dozen turns locked that condition in — a finished core whose straightness was protected, not repaired. What you receive is a shop-ready stepped core at the diameters your Sterling-cored forearm and handle expect (please verify your inner diameters will work), with Character Cues geometry built in and the original line of the wood still intact.

What is Janka? From Wood Database:
“The actual number listed in the wood profile is the amount of pounds-force (lbf) or newtons (N) required to imbed a .444″ (11.28 mm) diameter steel ball into the wood to half the ball’s diameter. This number is given for wood that has been dried to a 12% moisture content.”
Hard maple, prized among many cue builders, has a Janka of only 1,450.
What’s it mean, really? First, the wood is harder to dent. Second, it’s heavy. Third, the hit is as close to zero vibration as you’re going to get. Just a solid connection with no backsass. When you say move, the cue ball moves. When you say dance, she dances.

Spalted/Stabilized maple and black cherry burl on a shagbark hickory core. I made the forearm and butt sleeve from a single piece of spalted maple, chosen for it wild differences in color. Wood rots like an army advances. Sometimes fast here and slow there. Terrain matters. Headless shows the battlefield as the general sees it — except I arrested the war right in the middle, dried that wood to zero humidity, submerged under vacuum in Cactus Juice resin, then soaked in resin, then cooked til hard. The battle lines are frozen. This rotting piece of wood has a different fate. In death, life.
The name?
There’s a headless dude in the cue. Is all.
There are a lot of surface pocks that will be fill opportunities, possibly using electric blue mica to match the rings. Could also use ebony sawdust.

Spalted/Stabilized walnut and hard maple on full length beech core with copper rings. Spalted wood that is stabilized with Cactus Juice resin often has a density approaching purple heart. Walnut is usually considered to soft/light for cue building, which is why it is seldom seen. However, this is spalted/stabilized walnut, which picks up density in the process.
Constructed with a full length single piece Beech core, expect a medium hit. If you’re familiar with the signature Character Cues hit, which might be called on the stern side of firm, this will be on the friendly side of firm. And who doesn’t want a friend?
The name?
While in the build I discovered the live accoustic version of Big Love, and as is my custom, I played it on loop for days. I still can’t comprehend talent on that level, Lindsey Buckinham, the whole deal from frantic finger picking to swooping, crashing waves of sound, his voice — how many times has my soul, and yours, cried like that? Spalted/Stabilized Beech on full length shagbark hickory core. Spalted wood that is stabilized with Cactus Juice resin often has a density approaching purple heart. Beech, for some reason having to do with the structure of the wood, stabilizes very well. The hickory core is also both harder and stiffer than hard maple, the most common species used in cue cores. With premium (expensive!) Tomahawk collars, expect this butt’s natural weight with a stainless steel or brass pin to come in at about 15 ounces and to have a firm but not angry hit.
