Stick LE149: Limited Edition Batch 2: Blessed is the Steadfast
Quick ViewButt & 2 Joint Protectors (get one free): $775
I made my second limited edition batch in response to a request that I do more out of non-dyed stabilized wood. All of the Beatitudes butts began as a single piece of spalted wood long enough to be both a forearm and butt sleeve. Some were long enough to also offer an extension as an add on, if wanted. The Beatitudes Limited Edition have product numbers from LE149 to LE156. The grain in each contiguous piece is aligned even when the pieces are not contiguous, as when there is a ring set or handle in between. All of the designs were dictated by the wood itself, as my cuts were placed where I could get the straightest sections to work with.
Woods used in the batch: Oak, maple, apple, walnut, yellow birch, black birch burl, black cherry red rot, and of course, all on shagbark hickory cores. I harvest rotting wood from around where I live in western PA, dry it to zero percent humidity, and stabilize with Cactus Juice resin. The resulting material is significantly more dense than the original wood was — that’s why I can use a soft wood like walnut or cherry and have it produce a hit like hard maple or some other dense wood.
BLESSED IS THE STEADFAST has a forearm, handle, and butt sleeve of slightly curly, burnt in Alpaca Luke’s fire pit, piece of apple wood. The apple tree, incidentally, lost its life to alpacas rubbing their sides against it and debarking it over the years, as it provided them much shade and killing it made sense to their leaders.
The wood is stabilized now, better than new. However, the piece was so bent and shrunk after stabilizing, I had to introduce other wood to the mix. Black birch burl to the rescue.
You can throw black birch burl in a tux or in jeans and a wife beater, and it’s black birch burl. Its presence creates the respect it demands.
That’s always true of the real deal.
Grab this one. Don’t wait.

To be perfectly blunt, this butt hung a long time because I thought it was boring. I kept scratching my head as to why I chose such a blank piece of maple for the forearm.
Well sometimes a man finds evidence Someone’s looking out for him. What a butt! I finished this one yesterday and it’s just silly how gorgeous it is. That long blank maple forearm has a flaming fungal poop line at the base, all the way around. (I’m pretty sure those black squiggles from the fungi are poop, not roads or county lines.)
If you’re new to Character Cues, I grab dead rotten trees from the woods, cut them open and when I find cool patterns, I dry the wood to zero percent humidity, stabilize it in Cactus Juice resin, and the resulting wood/material is often nearly as dense as purple heart. That’s the secret to Character Cues. Shush don’t tell. The stabilized material is nearly impossible to warp without applying heat or moisture. Strong and dense and beautiful.
The handle is also maple, though from a different tree, not at my place but Alpaca Luke’s. I don’t know whether it’s burl or just highly figured, as the log was so rotten I couldn’t tell if what I cut off was the nub of a branch or a burl the size of an end table. The grain is just bananas. Bonkers. Depthful. And the pattern with the white mica brings to mind a young man walking a dark trail and bringing his own light.

Quick View$775.00Spalted/Stabilized Black Locust, Beech, Walnut BUTT with Black Cherry Burl/Spalted Maple JOINT PROTECTOR: $775
This is the first butt to become available on the “ready to ship” tab on CharacterCues.com for a long while. I could have named it A WALK THROUGH THE WOODS with all the different species involved.
I am enamored with the depth of the burl in the joint protector and with the knots in the black locust, the pale wood next to the butt sleeve. (Did you know Black Locust glows under a black light? Indeed. It causes a stir. And then of course, I can’t fail to mention the walnut’s chatoyance. It’s what they invented the word for. And the beech! Good night! Bolts of orange through bolts of black and brown and burnt bolts — !!!
Plus I added a quarter inch cap of maple on the end of the joint protector just for the squiggles. And the image the squiggles drew in my mind’s eye were of a frog looking off, cap askance, at a summer love arriving to the party to party.
Equipped with extension-accepting bumper.
