Black BurcHowdy torrefied low deflection shaft
This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageQuick View$375.00 – $400.00Price range: $375.00 through $400.00Video: Craig Falls: Gangster Qs: https://www.gangsterqs.com/ Thank you Craig!
The BurchHowdy (prototype v3) handles amazing — feels solid. Can’t see any deflection from shooting. Did full table with right/left English with continuous even results hitting the diamond then getting the English to spin… Overall I’m loving it…
I did play APA league vs an amazing 7 skill in 8 ball and was able to win 2-0. The cue allowed me to almost get 2 break and runs going in the match.
On top on the great feel and play I got non stop compliments of the piece of art I now carry.
— Jovani Diaz, owner of Fancy Me; shaft next to the butt is BurcHowdy V3 built to match, sitting beside a shagbark hickory breaker.

“There will be much more coming down the pipeline on the Burchowdy review……..but, let’s just say this right now………kids, put those carbon fiber shafts in the garage/fire/toilet (for you in Missouri Mississippi or Louisiana) turlet………this is far superior to cf………. I have one of Claytons cf shafts………super quality……..this burchowdy……….no comparision!!!! The burchowdy………..well lets be honest……… I am a 357 Fargo…….. I screwed the burchowdy down to Reagan’s Favorite Suit and started shooting. Results, keep in mind….,.I mostly suck, in about a dozen racks, I had a break and run (go El Jefe) a derby and 2 1 ball short of a derby…….for those that know me, well nevermind. Character cues are what you need to accelerate your game to the next level. Don’t wait….. accelerate!”–Glenn Johnson
The Character Cues Black BurcHowdy and BurcHowdy FW low-deflection Black Birch Torrefied Shafts
The Black BurcHowdy is my answer to players who want carbon-fiber-level low deflection but still crave the natural feel, feedback, and soul of real wood.
This is a torrefied Pennsylvania Black Birch shaft — denser, stronger, and more stable than maple. After slow-drying and torrefaction, it delivers the kind of straight, low-deflection performance you’d expect from the best carbon shafts, but with a warmer hit and that unmistakable wood character you can’t get anywhere else.
Draws like DaVinci.
Better English than Shakespeare.
Deflection?
Watch the video at the top of this page. That’s real-world testing — not marketing fluff. Side-by-side with carbon, the BurcHowdy holds its own and then some.
• Torrefied Black Birch – Naturally denser than maple. Torrefaction makes it lighter, stiffer, and far more stable while reducing deflection dramatically.
• Proven Low Deflection – Video documentation and feedback from prototype owners show the Black BurcHowdy performs at the level of top carbon fiber shafts while keeping a more natural, responsive feel.
• Handcrafted One at a Time – Limited production. Each shaft gets the same attention I give my full custom cues.
• Lifetime Warranty — I build these shafts to last a lifetime. Phenolic insert for rock-solid thread life, a hard CA finish, and torrefied Pennsylvania Black Birch that doesn’t mar or scratch nearly as easily as regular shafts.
• That Character Look – No two are exactly alike. Why Players Are Choosing the BurcHowdy
If you’ve been stuck between “I love wood but hate the deflection” and “carbon plays great but feels dead,” this shaft was built for you.
Real owners are reporting tighter aiming, better control on long shots, and that satisfying feedback they missed with full carbon. It’s still wood — just wood that finally behaves like the modern game demands.
Your Black BurcHowdy shaft will be built the way a true custom should be — with care, attention to detail, and direct communication from me.
You have two versions to choose from:
• Standard Black BurcHowdy – The torrefied Pennsylvania Black Birch low-deflection shaft shown in the photos and video. 3.6 oz is normal.
• Black BurcHowdy FW – A 4.1 oz front-weighted version featuring a beautiful Gaboon ebony ring that adds meaningful weight forward while keeping the same low-deflection performance.Customization & Matching
Every shaft is built to order. You can have the standard look with your choice of white, black, or tan collars, copper or brass rings, and black birch burl accents. If you’re purchasing a full cue (shaft + butt) at the same time, I’ll build the shaft to match your butt.
If you already own a Character Cue butt, I’ll do my best to match it using spalted or stabilized woods I have on hand, but I’ve also found that both ebony and black birch burl look good with almost anything.
Production Pipeline
I have lowered prices from my earlier price, which was settled before I purchased a 4 spindle CNC soon to arrive at my shop. It will turn tapers at many multiples the speed I can currently do them one at a time. It will cut tenons, dowels, and cut inlays, not that I intend to pun inlays on shafts. I ran estimates and found that the part of the job that usually takes a week of nonstop feeding the machine, all day every day, will take hours. I’ve also secured enough Black Birch for the next many hundred shafts. I cut 2 birch trees and carried them around in the back of the truck all winter for traction. It’s all drying next to the sawmill. My costs will be decreasing and so I want to be sure to honor your dollars as much as I do my time — all part of that command: Love One Another.
The current price is good for the next 20 shafts sold. After that I will evaluate and reset the price.
FULFILLMENT: These production BurcHowdy shafts will be fulfilled after the 30 Limited Edition shafts being produced and delivered in July/August 2026, unless purchased with a Character Cues butt that is being finished before then.
Before I start building your shaft, I will personally reach out to discuss ferrule diameter, tip selection, joint type, and any other details. This is a true custom shaft, built for you. Fulfillment is usually in 2-3 weeks after getting build details, but if you’d like a current estimate of fulfillment time based on my current workflow, just email me at Clayton@CharacterCues.

Stick 158: Watching the Animal
Quick View$775.00Butt & Joint Protector: $775
I’ve been wanting to use the maple handle in a cue for more than a year. I had it on my building board, where I put outstanding pieces of wood to wait on inspiration, for months, next to a couple pieces of red and yellow maple. I decided to build the butt and all of a sudden, the red and yellow just bored the hell out of me. I started looking around and tested a bunch of colors with the handle and went back to the red and yellow. Soon as I saw it again I knew there was no way I’d ignore the voice saying no way, turn back, that dog don’t hunt.
Lo and behold, a piece of beech with a dark shadowy figure in a cloak — I like! — and loogidat walnut! With a bark inclusion? Hell yea. Hell yeah.
It spoke. I listened. It’s glued and I can’t wait to see this one with a finish.

Stick LE150: Limited Edition Batch 2: Blessed are the Reconcilers
Quick View$775.00Butt & Joint Protector: $775
I made my second limited edition batch in response to a request that I do more out of non-dyed stabilized wood. All of the Beatitudes butts began as a single piece of spalted wood long enough to be both a forearm and butt sleeve. Some were long enough to also offer an extension as an add on, if wanted. The Beatitudes Limited Edition have product numbers from LE149 to LE156. The grain in each contiguous piece is aligned even when the pieces are not contiguous, as when there is a ring set or handle in between. All of the designs were dictated by the wood itself, as my cuts were placed where I could get the straightest sections to work with.
Woods used in the batch: Oak, maple, apple, walnut, yellow birch, black birch burl, black cherry red rot, and of course, all on shagbark hickory cores. I harvest rotting wood from around where I live in western PA, dry it to zero percent humidity, and stabilize with Cactus Juice resin. The resulting material is significantly more dense than the original wood was — that’s why I can use a soft wood like walnut or cherry and have it produce a hit like hard maple or some other dense wood.
BLESSED ARE THE RECONCILERS is a dumb luck fluke. I had wood stabilized for a batch of 7, but when I started layouts I realized the black cherry red rot wasn’t dark enough to use for bold contrasts. Some sticks need bold contrasts. I went to the heater where I keep punky wood ready to stabilize, grabbed enough walnut for one small cook, which basically fits in 2 toaster ovens, and stabilized a batch of walnut. All the other butts in the group were pieces set aside because they were a long single piece and had so much activity in the grain and spalting, I knew they’d deliver. But when I cleaned up the walnut after the cook I realized that two of the pieces were contiguous. The walnut I have is such a gnarled, beautiful mess I have to cut out parts of a pool cue section by section. These two pieces must have slipped my mind to set aside. They are separated by black birch burl. Brass rings.
