    Stick 175: Bad Trip

    Butt & Joint Protector: $825

There is so much funky behavior going on in this stick I don’t know what to say. I used blue dye on one end of the forearm and one end of the butt sleeve. I used red on the other. No idea where the other colors came from. Imagine the party around this punch bowl.

American Hornbeam is also known as Ironwood in west PA. The trees are scrubby and twisted, hard to get nice stuff to work with. On a purple heart core, expect a very firm hit. This is the kind of butt that seems to have its own gravity. Very solid.

Black BurcHowdy torrefied low deflection shaft

The BurchHowdy (prototype v3) handles amazing — feels solid. Can’t see any deflection from shooting. Did full table with right/left English with continuous even results hitting the diamond then getting the English to spin… Overall I’m loving it…

I did play APA league vs an amazing 7 skill in 8 ball and was able to win 2-0. The cue allowed me to almost get 2 break and runs going in the match.
On top on the great feel and play I got non stop compliments of the piece of art I now carry.

    — Jovani Diaz, owner of Fancy Me; shaft next to the butt is BurcHowdy V3 built to match, sitting beside a shagbark hickory breaker.

“There will be much more coming down the pipeline on the Burchowdy review……..but, let’s just say this right now………kids, put those carbon fiber shafts in the garage/fire/toilet (for you in Missouri Mississippi or Louisiana) turlet………this is far superior to cf………. I have one of Claytons cf shafts………super quality……..this burchowdy……….no comparision!!!!”
“The burchowdy………..well lets be honest……… I am a 357 Fargo…….. I screwed the burchowdy down to Reagan’s Favorite Suit and started shooting. Results, keep in mind….,.I mostly suck, in about a dozen racks, I had a break and run (go El Jefe) a derby and 2 1 ball short of a derby…….for those that know me, well nevermind. Character cues are what you need to accelerate your game to the next level. Don’t wait….. accelerate!”

The Character Cues Black BurcHowdy low deflection torrefied shaft, for sale now, is for delivery in summer of 2026.

See Anthony Piscopo’s review of his V3 Prototype below

    • All shafts come with matching black birch burl joint protector.
    • Purchaser can choose plain grain or character grain.
    • If purchased with a butt, your Black BurcHowdy can also be built to match the butt if you desire.
    • All orders for the Limited Edition 30 are due to be fulfilled in June/July 2026.
    • Fulfillment for orders from this page will likely be constructed and shipped in July or August, 2026
    • Your Black Burchowdy shaft will be built with either the standard look, as seen in the images, with your choice of white, black, or tan collars, copper or brass rings, and black birch burl, or to match your concurrently purchased butt.
    • If you already own a Character Cues butt, I might be able to match that as well, depending on whether I have spalted/stabilized wood that matches. It is very difficult to match colors from prior cooks exactly, so no guarantees that I can match an earlier purchased butt.
    • I will be in contact with all purchasers before completing your Black BurcHowdy to discuss the build, ferrule diameter, tip, etc. This is a custom shaft.
    • Orders will be fulfilled in order purchased.
    • Current threads and collar diameters available:
      • 3/8-10 mod, .845″ collar
      • 3/8-10 mod, .84″ collar
      • Radial, .85″ collar
      • Uniloc, .85″ collar
      • Others might be available upon request. Depends on whether I can buy a mandrel to match. Email clayton@charactercues for inquiries.

    Woods Used: Black Birch Burl

    Rings: Brass

    Butt Length: 30″

    Core: Purple Heart or Hickory

    Collars: White Tomahawk

Probable full cue natural weight: 18-22 oz. depending on core and pin metal (brass, stainless, aluminum). Purple heart cores are about 2 oz. heavier than hickory, on average. Using a hickory core leaves more possibility of front-weighting the butt and not going over target weight.

    • Butt with Purple Heart core: 17-18 oz.
    • Butt with Hickory core: 14-16 oz.
    • BurcHowdy: 3.7 oz.

Pin: 3/8-10 mod (brass, stainless, or aluminum. Desired weight guides the choice. Pin metal not selected until butt has reached final dimensions and I can give more accurate weight estimates. Goal should be brass or stainless to avoid a back-heavy cue.)

There is so much funky behavior going on in this stick I don’t know what to say. I used blue dye on one end of the forearm and one end of the butt sleeve. I used red on the other. No idea where the other colors came from. Green doesn’t come out of blue and red, normally. But there are so many different hues it’s like someone brought their own colors to the party and dumped it in the punchbowl.

Regardless, American Hornbeam is also known as Ironwood in west PA. The trees are scrubby and twisted, hard to get nice stuff to work with. This is the first butt I’ve done that is all Ironwood on the outside. Expect a very firm hit. This is the kind of butt that seems to have its own gravity. Very solid. Low key and stable, for a screamer.

What’s special here? The top of the butt was dipped in yellow, the bottom in black. The forearm (top) and butt sleeve (bottom) were dipped in green on the ends closest the handle section. Then the forearm and butt sleeve were submerged in burnt orange. (see first video) Four colors in the resin and a fifth in the purple rings.

Also note the grain is aligned through the beech and maple ring sections. The handle is heavily spalted tiger maple with a single shade of green in the resin. All the color dynamics in the handle are from the coloring left by the wood or most often, the fungus that ate it!

For a closeup on the grain and a rotational look, see the second video below.

Collars can be swapped out with black, white, or even shades of brown. Butt currently has a darker brown on the bottom. Got my collars mixed half and half with another set and didn’t notice until the finish was on them, as they look the same before.
