What is Janka? From Wood Database:
“The actual number listed in the wood profile is the amount of pounds-force (lbf) or newtons (N) required to imbed a .444″ (11.28 mm) diameter steel ball into the wood to half the ball’s diameter. This number is given for wood that has been dried to a 12% moisture content.”
Hard maple, prized among many cue builders, has a Janka of only 1,450.
What’s it mean, really? First, the wood is harder to dent. Second, it’s heavy. Third, the hit is as close to zero vibration as you’re going to get. Just a solid connection with no backsass. When you say move, the cue ball moves. When you say dance, she dances.

Quick View$550.00The BurchHowdy (prototype v3) handles amazing — feels solid. Can’t see any deflection from shooting. Did full table with right/left English with continuous even results hitting the diamond then getting the English to spin… Overall I’m loving it…
I did play APA league vs an amazing 7 skill in 8 ball and was able to win 2-0. The cue allowed me to almost get 2 break and runs going in the match.

- Purchaser can choose plain grain or character grain.
- If purchased with a butt, your Black BurcHowdy can also be built to match the butt if you desire.
- All orders for the Limited Edition 30 are due to be fulfilled in June/July 2026.
- Fulfillment for orders from this page will likely be constructed and shipped in July or August, 2026
- Your Black Burchowdy shaft will be built with either the standard look, as seen in the images, with your choice of white, black, or tan collars, copper or brass rings, and black birch burl, or to match your concurrently purchased butt.
- If you already own a Character Cues butt, I might be able to match that as well, depending on whether I have spalted/stabilized wood that matches. It is very difficult to match colors from prior cooks exactly, so no guarantees that I can match an earlier purchased butt.
- I will be in contact with all purchasers before completing your Black BurcHowdy to discuss the build, ferrule diameter, tip, etc. This is a custom shaft.
