Stick 190: John Galt
Quick View$1,125.00Butt & Joint Protector: $1,125
Spalted/Stabilized black cherry burl forearm and butt sleeve with a truly special spalted/stabilized curly maple handle. Full length 3/4″ purple heart core. That means the best hit on planet earth.
But what makes the handle special? And why that provocative name?
The handle has a phoenix image in the spalt. Wings on left and right. Weird head.
And the burl is out of this world, loads of black fill for that underneath-the-polish-there’s-a-lot-you-don’t-know-about-me kind of vibe.
I can’t plan images in the wood. Can’t even guess which wood might produce. But every now and then something remarkable shows up and stirs the mind. That’s John Galt.

Stick 189: Rhapsody
Quick View$775.00(extra long) Butt & Joint Protector: $775
Spalted/Stabilized birch and maple (handle) on a shagbark hickory core.
I stabilized the forearm and butt sleeve last year and they rested on a shelf without a handle between them since then. Every now and then, I’d look at all the builds, one per shelf, and swap handles to see if something might come alive with the colors. Then I’d put them all back and go to the other side of the shop where I have a couple few hundred pieces of stabilized wood, all the colors and species I have on hand, and see if I could find anything that complemented the sleeve and forearm.
Then one day everything falls in place. A color that makes the soul go Mmmmmmmmm? A grain/spalt pattern that complements the other patterns instead of confusing them. The heart pounds. Joy, right under the surface, starts percolating into words and action. The frantic hunt to find the perfect rings is on. The only way to stay true blue and create the sort of POP rings need to create is…
Electric Blue! That’ll work! My joy is complete!
Peace. Rest. Love. All is sublime.
I make the square block of electric blue Ash round. I core it. Measure and cut rings, dry fit… The hour is late. Wife’s in bed.
“I don’t care. Rhapsody glues tonight.”

Stick 183: Big Love
Quick View$775.00Butt & Joint Protector: $775
Spalted/Stabilized walnut and hard maple on full length beech core with copper rings. Spalted wood that is stabilized with Cactus Juice resin often has a density approaching purple heart. Walnut is usually considered to soft/light for cue building, which is why it is seldom seen. However, this is spalted/stabilized walnut, which picks up density in the process.
Constructed with a full length single piece Beech core, expect a medium hit. If you’re familiar with the signature Character Cues hit, which might be called on the stern side of firm, this will be on the friendly side of firm. And who doesn’t want a friend?
The name?
While in the build I discovered the live accoustic version of Big Love, and as is my custom, I played it on loop for days. I still can’t comprehend talent on that level, Lindsey Buckinham, the whole deal from frantic finger picking to swooping, crashing waves of sound, his voice — how many times has my soul, and yours, cried like that? So powerful. Lean back. Turn it up.
Then come back and buy Big Love! 🙂

Stick 185: Wormwood
Quick View$875.00Butt & Joint Protector: $875
Spalted/Stabilized Ironwood (American Hornbeam) is dense to begin with. Stabilized, it’s quite hard.
The handle section is Black Birch burl from my local Amish friends. Black Birch is a little harder than hard maple, while burl is more dense than non-burl.
Wormwood is constructed with a Beech full-length core; expect a medium-firm hit.
The Name? The Ironwood has wormholes and there are seven rings. Wormwood in Revelation is in the Third Trumpet (of 7); the Trumpets are part of the 7th Seal. Wormwood blazes through the sky and poisons a third of the water on the planet. Praying I’ll be at the wedding instead.

Quick View$775.00Butt & Joint Protector: $775
Spalted/Stabilized Beech on full length shagbark hickory core. Spalted wood that is stabilized with Cactus Juice resin often has a density approaching purple heart. Beech, for some reason having to do with the structure of the wood, stabilizes very well. The hickory core is also both harder and stiffer than hard maple, the most common species used in cue cores. With premium (expensive!) Tomahawk collars, expect this butt’s natural weight with a stainless steel or brass pin to come in at about 15 ounces and to have a firm but not angry hit.

Stick 182: Shelter Girl
Quick View$1,075.00Butt & Joint Protector: $1075
Shelter Girl is named in honor of the Lady Jovi, Princess Pit bull of the Lindemuth people, and to whomeversoelse she deigns.
My aunt Jean said when she dies she wants to come back as my dog, which was meant to indicate Jovi gets a lot of attention, but actually sounds weird now that I type it. Anyhoo
This orange wood is spalted and stabilized maple, which gets its action from being both rotten, so there’s lots of fungal lines and color pockets, but also from being part of the tree that supported a sizable branch, so you have a lot of compression swirl. The log I cut the branch nub from is still over at Alpaca Luke’s. Feels like I can hear it calling, sometimes.
The handle with the inlays is Gaboon Ebony. Not to be an ebony snob or anything, but that’s the type that would permit snobbery, were one given to such pleasures.
There’s another block of maple suitable to build an extension, should one be desired, and enough blue for the joint protector/shaft ring, should a shaft be purchased as well.
If you do want the ultimate badass Character Cues shooting experience, pair with a BurcHowdy shaft, regular or heavy, which can help forward-weight your cue and provide both commanding English as well as low-deflection similar to carbon fiber shafts, but with the feel and response of wood.
To purchase the butt & joint protector, to be finished October/November 2026, simply add to cart and check out. Most folks choose a payment plan.
If you’d like to add a shaft and/or an extension, email me at Cl*****@***********es.com and I’ll change the page to reflect your preferences.
