What’s going to make this butt special to someone, first, is its size.
It’s 1 3/16″ longer than a “normal” 29″, with an equal length shaft your cue will be 2 3/8″ longer, or 60 3/8.” It’s also a bit on the heavy side, at 16.8 oz. With a carbon fiber or birch shaft, it’s a 19-20 ounce cue. With purple heart, 21. With added weight, 23.
What’s special about the build? The applewood has a nice curl and my friend Alpaca Luke burned the whole 10 foot log for a few sessions as the border of his campfire before I rescued it. I dried and stabilized it and added blue dye to the resin. Now its good as new and denser than wood. (Part of what gives Character Cues their distinctly solid hits.)
The parts of the apple forearm and joint protector that were exposed to fire are black. I love how the blue and black work together, on an otherwise fairly light colored forearm.
The handle section is tiger maple, also spalted and stabilized. I love how the heart shaped knot in the center of the handle goes all the way through.
Woods Used: Apple forearm, tiger maple handle, beech green rings. All spalted and stabilized.
Butt Length: 30 3/16″ including bumper
Butt Weight: 16.8 oz.
Core: hickory
Glue Date: 6/24
Pin: 3/8-10 brass
Collar: .85″ brown phenolic
Butt: 1.25″
A word about shafts:
I build shafts out of ten species and carbon fiber. My advice is this: if you have a shaft you love to use, buy this butt to match that shaft. If you’ve heard of a famous shaft that you’d like to try, buy that shaft to match this butt.
However, if you’re into the art of it and want to have fun, try something new, and make your Character Cue fully badass, consider one of my ten species or carbon fiber with a like-wood decorative ring.

Stick 95: Good Old Days
Quick ViewCurrent Bid: $425.00AUCTION IS FOR Spalted/Stabilized Black Cherry Red Rot and Beech BUTT with JOINT PROTECTOR
- List $775

I love the simplicity of butt. The beech forearm and butt sleeve were barely spalted beech. Thus when I stabilized the wood, only the punky stuff accepted resin, and the faint green dye I added. So you get the gorgeous gold of beech with all the tiny flecking in place, along with some of the more interesting contrasts created with the green dye. Simple and elegant, along with the rings. But for raw eye grabbing beauty, the black cherry red rot handle and rings carry the burden. Black cherry red rot forms in the centers of most mature black cherry trees in my area. I don’t know if that happens elsewhere. Regardless, the rot deepens the color of the red into a red brown, and the most decayed sections end up looking burnt red brown. I added green mica to the CA glue I used to fill the surface gaps in the stabilized wood. This is a longer, heavier butt than “normal.” With an equal sized shaft, the cue would be 61 1/4″ instead of standard 58″. You’ll also notice the butt is big in your hand. 1.275″ And a heavy 16.2 oz. Add a weight bolt and a purple heart shaft and you have a break monster. Then add a purple heart break handle and extension and carbon fiber shaft, you have a swiss army cue like none ever created on planet Earth til now.One of you Characters deserves Good Old Days. 😉Woods Used: Black cherry red rot, beech. Quick ViewCurrent Bid: $575.00AUCTION FOR BUTT & JOINT PROTECTOR
This is a special 2-week charitable auction. One of my dearest writing buddies is unable to work due to rheumatoid arthritis and his wife has an advanced cancer that has spread to several organs. They’re having a hard time of it.
Every penny of the auction (and proceeds from shafts/extensions to complete it) goes to Dubhghlas & Mrs. Kraus.
Dub Kraus is old school. Won’t ask for help. He’d rather punch you in the nose than accept a dollar he didn’t “earn.” But I’m here to tell him about the economy of love. He’s touched so many of us with his grumbly humor, wit, and grace, he’s due all our hearts can unload on him. His wife especially, as I’m sure he’d be the first to call her his better half. Please help me show him that we all know where he’s coming from, we all respect a man with principles, and we all know that the humblest and strongest among us deserve a lift when they walk through the deepest of valleys.
If you’re into dark fiction told in a campfire voice, buy and share his WORK
If you’d like to donate to the GoFundMe page set up by his editor for his fans, please find it HERE
And if you’d like a medium-firm hitting butt that’ll steal every eyeball in the pool hall, bid on ROOSTER like you intend to win.
Thank you, my friends. I am grateful for you. God love you.

To be perfectly blunt, this butt hung a long time because I thought it was boring. I kept scratching my head as to why I chose such a blank piece of maple for the forearm.
Well sometimes a man finds evidence Someone’s looking out for him. What a butt! I finished this one yesterday and it’s just silly how gorgeous it is. That long blank maple forearm has a flaming fungal poop line at the base, all the way around. (I’m pretty sure those black squiggles from the fungi are poop, not roads or county lines.)
If you’re new to Character Cues, I grab dead rotten trees from the woods, cut them open and when I find cool patterns, I dry the wood to zero percent humidity, stabilize it in Cactus Juice resin, and the resulting wood/material is often nearly as dense as purple heart. That’s the secret to Character Cues. Shush don’t tell. The stabilized material is nearly impossible to warp without applying heat or moisture. Strong and dense and beautiful.
The handle is also maple, though from a different tree, not at my place but Alpaca Luke’s. I don’t know whether it’s burl or just highly figured, as the log was so rotten I couldn’t tell if what I cut off was the nub of a branch or a burl the size of an end table. The grain is just bananas. Bonkers. Depthful. And the pattern with the white mica brings to mind a young man walking a dark trail and bringing his own light.
Butt is available to buy from this page. Just add to cart and checkout. Ships when the payment clears. Add a shaft, add a week.
This butt has a full hickory core. Hickory is denser and stronger than hard maple. Skilled players will feel a difference. Add a BurcHowdy for the ultimate low deflection experience.
