In a nutshell: Only 30 Black Burchowdy shafts are available for pre-sale. Full transparency: I’m using their sale to fund the process below. I intend to have a blast with it, make some Youtube videos so everyone can keep track of the progress, post to the Facebook group every time I’m working on the project, and ultimately develope the next absolute must-have low deflection shaft. The plan below is in motion.

  1. I’m buying a sawmill; ($9200) Alpaca Luke is supplying the black birch. He’s overrun with it and values a friend with a sawmill more than a few black birch trees.
  2. I’m sawing our first logs in a matter of days. The bigger logs will be saved for the sawmill and will produce the wood that fulfills these orders.
  3. The 8″ and smaller stuff I’ll process on my shop bandsaw into green turning blanks. I’ll use this wood for test purposes.
  4. I’m buying a giant stainless steel chamber (about $800) which I’ll seal and vacuum.
  5. The stainless steel vacuum chamber will contain about 20 shafts at a time for the torrefication process. I’ll be experimenting with that process in about 2-3 months.
  6. Once I produce torrefied shafts I’ll begin testing different cook times to see how that affects shaft play.

  8. Reality Check: I’ve made a lot of black birch shafts and it’s reliably superior to hard maple in my view. Below you’ll find evidence compiled from Wood Database that leads me to believe that torrefied black birch will be superior to torrefied hard maple (Kielwood) for premium low deflection shaft building. I intend to produce a shaft with an edge over Kielwood.  HOWEVER, I could be wrong, and you could end up receiving a torrefied black birch shaft that is not the best on the planet, but merely wonderful, chock full of Character, and probably still the best you’ve ever played with. Sorry: I can’t guarantee best in the world, but I do guarantee best I can do, and promise to pursue perfection in these shafts simply because they carry the Character Cues name, which is mine.
  9. The planned product delivery date is July 2026, however, it is possible I’ll be able to begin delivering them sooner. That depends on how the torrefication tests go later this summer. I’m planning an entire month away from cue building once the shaft process is ready to begin fulfilling orders.
  10. The image is of a ready-to-finish black birch burl ring on a cherry shaft, which should have a similar color to torrefied black birch. The finished color will be darker, like the burl joint protector in the image. Expect a fairly dark reddish brown for the shaft. Expect a similar black birch burl ring with black and red accent rings and burl joint protector, as pictured, if also ordered.
